Woman "duped of Rs. 10 lakh by NRI husband'

A Khamano-based girl, Damanpreet, has alleged that his NRI husband had duped her and his family by taking `10 lakh from them on the pretext of taking her to Canada after the marriage.
In a complaint Damanpreet said that she had got married to Thalwinder Singh of Mohali on May 13, 2012 and her parents had spent a huge amount on dowry. She claimed that at the time of fixing the marriage her husband had told her parents that he would take her to Canada after marriage.
She alleged that after the marriage her husband demanded `10 lakh from her for arranging visa and assured them that the money would be returned later.
She said the amount was delivered to her father-in-law. She said after about one and a half month of the marriage her husband took all the relevant documents besides the photocopy of the passport with him and assured her that he would soon call her to Canada after arranging visa.
Damanpreet further alleged that after her husband left for Canada, her in-laws started harassing her for dowry and also beat her up.
The police said that they have booked her NRI husband Thalwinder Singh, father Mohinder Singh and mother Kuldeep Kaur (residents of Mohali).
The case has been handed over to inspector Ashwini Kumar of Kheri Naudh Singh Police station for further investigation.
