Neighbours trade rape charges

Gang rape to counter rape.

A woman who had leveled rape charges against a resident of Shahi police station in Bareilly district learned to her utter shock that a case of gang rape had been lodged against her cousins by the daughter of the accused within 48 hours. So far, police have filed an FIR and arrested one person and investigations are on.

A 40-year-old widow residing in Moti Nagar locality under Shahi police station on June 30 lodged a complaint of rape against a resident, Babloo, accusing him of raping her when she was alone in the house. In her report, the survivor also named the father and brother of the accused, stating that when she brought the matter to their notice, they allegedly insulted and abused her before driving her out of their house.

Acting on her complaint, police filed a case against the three and arrested Babloo, the main accused who owns a saw mill in the neighbourhood and booked him under various sections of the IPC.

Two days after her brother was arrested, Babloo's physically challenged sister who has claimed to be a minor approached the police alleging that she has been gang-raped by the widow's cousins.

In her complaint, she alleged that the accused — Shoaib and Shakeel — barged into her house on the night of July 1 while her mother and sister were asleep and gang-raped her after threatening her at knife-point. The two also attacked her with the knife as a result of which she sustained injuries on her left hand.

Taking cognizance of her complaint, the DIG ordered the Shahi police station to file a case against Shoaib and Shakeel, said Shahi police station inspector Shivraj Singh. Both are evading arrest. Both survivors were sent for medical examination and their reports are awaited.
