Dowry case: 26-year-old man ‘assaulted’ in police custody opposite Hotel Mountview

High drama prevailed at the Sector 10 branch of State Bank of Patiala opposite Hotel Mountview on Monday afternoon when a group of people allegedly assaulted a 26-year-old who is in police custody following a dowry case.

The incident happened when Ishaan Kataria, 26, a resident of Sector 11, was taken to the bank in Sector 10 to recover his wife Gurleen's jewellery, as per court's orders. He was arrested by UT Police on Sunday after his wife accused him of harassing her for dowry.

"About 1 pm, Ishaan was brought to the State Bank of Patiala, Sector 10 branch by police officials of women's cell, UT Police. Ishaan's parents and two of his friends accompanied him to the bank. His wife, Gurleen, had come along with her parents. Gurleen wanted to take back the jewellery in Ishaan's bank locker which her parents had gifted her in the marriage," said Rohitaaz Kumar, Ishaan's cousin.

After Gurleen had taken all the jewellery, her mother asked Ishaan why his friends were there. One of Ishaan's friends allegedly mocked her following which they were asked to wait outside the bank.
Gurleen's mother allegedly called her son Raminder alias Lucky and minutes later, he came with his friends who then allegedly assaulted Ishaan.

Rohitaaz alleged that Raminder's friends started beating Ishaan in front of the inquiry officer and other police officers. In the assault, a constable, Ram Rattan, also suffered injuries. "My uncle (Ishaan's father) told me that Ishaan was beaten in full public view and police officers did not do enough to rescue him. Ishaan's parents then called the Police Control Room. A PCR van came and all of them were taken to Police Station, Sector 3," he said.

After the incident, Rohitaaz was called by Ishaan's father asking him to get his car parked outside the bank. "Uncle asked me to take the keys from him and get the car. He was at the police station and apprehended vandalism with his car," Rohitaaz said. He added that he called a friend, Sanam Sekhon, on his way to the police station to check on the car. Sekhon, who lives nearby, said he was at the market when the incident occurred and confirmed that some people vandalised a red car parked near the bank which belonged to Ishaan's father Vinod Kataria.

All the injured were taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. The doctors confirmed serious injuries on Ishaan's back and arm. The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Gyan Singh, has given a complaint against both the families.

Some people, including Lucky, were detained under provisions of preventive arrest and were released later.

CROSS-CASES

About 10 pm, police registered cross-cases against Ishaan and his father Vinod Kataria and Gurleen's father and brother Raminder for rioting. DSP Ashish Kapoor said, "Ishaan tried to flee from the bank and banged into the car which broke the window pane of the car and injured himself." Both wind screens and a window pane were broken. Two of Ishaan's friends, Manish and Aman, were also booked and arrested.

Ishaan's family members alleged that the police officials were pressuring both the families to enter into a compromise.
