Woman alleges rape by jail staff in Sheikhpura jail

ShobhaDevi (name changed), an undertrial accused of killing her husband in connivance with her paramour and lodged in the Sheikhpura district jail since February, has lodged a complaint of rape against a jamadar of the jail, Devendra Ram.

The victim narrated her woes to the Sheikhpura chief judicial magistrate (CJM) on May 15 when she was brought to the court for routine production in connection with her case. Taking cognizance of the matter, the court ordered the district police to lodge an FIR against the accused on Friday. In her statement to the court, the woman said that on April 5 when she was alone in her barrack, Ram sexually assaulted her. She also said that a jail inmate, Birbal alias Biru who protested the rape incident, was later locked up in a cell for two days.

 

Following her statement to the court, Sheikhpura SP Meenu Kumari and SDPO Santosh Kumar extensively examined the victim for hours on Friday. The SP consequently ordered for lodging of FIR against the jail jamadar. The accused, however, managed to escape soon after the FIR was lodged with Model police station. The SP said a police team is raiding possible hideouts of Ram.

On the question that the jail officials suppressed the facts and did not allow the victim to lodge an FIR with the local police after the incident of rape on April 5, the SP said an investigation is underway and whoever is found guilty of suppressing the facts, will be punished. The police officer added that if the complicity of jail officials in the matter is found, a competent authority of the department would take appropriate action against the guilty persons.

Molestation charge: Meanwhile in Nalanda, a woman alleged that a co-villager had molested her and demanded action against the accused. A woman identified as Guria Devi (name changed) a resident of Kanhaiaganj under Ongari PS area in Nalanda district alleged that her husband and relatives had a heated discussion with a co-villager, Nayeem Ansari after he allegedly passed lewd remarks on her sister-in-law. She said in her statement to the SHO of all-woman police station Pinki Kumari that Ansari entered her house, thrashed her husband and tried to molest her.

DSP (law and order) Mohd Qasim said Ansari had a heated discussion with the husband of the complainant and both fought in which both received injuries, but the molestation bid is baseless.

Ongari SHO Dinesh Kumar Malakar said Guria Devi's husband Loknath Gope and Ansari scuffled in which both received injuries but the accusation of molestation bid by Nayeem Ansari could not be confirmed.
