BANGALORE: The murder of 25-year-old bride Ramya was cracked with the arrest of her bridegroom Nandan Gowda who confessed to killing her. Her threat to file a dowry harassment case against him if he didn't agree to live away from his parents proved costly for the commerce graduate from Ambedkar Nagar, Yeshwanthpur.

Police on Thursday arrested Nandan Gowda alias Nandan HN, 25, and his associate Sunil Kumar Munikrishnappa 25, both from Hessaraghatta for allegedly strangling Ramya in Nandan's Maruti Wagon R to death near HMT factory on Tuesday night.

In his confession, Nandan told Yeshwanthpur police that Ramya started pestering him to get married ever since their affair started in May 2012. They met for the first time on her birthday on May 21, 2010. "She used to threaten me saying she would go to the media and defame me. Despite my family's opposition, I decided to marry her. But her harassment increased when she started forcing me to find a separate home for her. She hated staying with my parents and said she'd file a dowry harassment case if I forced her to stay with my parents. I was against moving out as I'm the only son," Nandan told police.

Nandan said he called Ramya on Tuesday and asked her to meet him to show the mangalsutra. "Ramya met Nandan and Sunil at Mathikere Park and all three went to Mantri Mall in Malleswaram. On the way, Sunil gave Ramya a mango fruit juice laced with sleeping pills," police said. Sunil bought the juice and sleeping pills in MS Palya.

Meanwhile, Ramya called her mother saying she would bring Nandan home and asked her mother to keep some cold lime juice ready. "Then Ramya slipped into sleep. The duo parked the car near HMT compound in Peenya. They strangled Ramya to death using a mobile charger cable," Yeshwanthpur police said. "They dumped the body near Platinum City and tried to disfigure her face by smashing it with a boulder. But the frequent flow of vehicles deterred them and they sped away in their vehicle," police said.

Nandan tried to deflect suspicion by dropping in at Ramya's home on Wednesday morning and said Ramya hadn't met him on Tuesday.
