Pizza delivery boy attempts to rape, kill woman in Mumbai
A 22-year-old Worli resident's decision to order pizza for dinner has landed her in hospital with serious head injuries and stab wounds, after a teenaged pizza delivery boy attempted to rape and kill her on Tuesday night.
The 17-year-old accused, who fled with the victim's gold chain and mobile phone, was arrested from his home in Worli Koliwada in the early hours of Wednesday.
The police said the victim, a government employee who shares the flat with her aunt, was home alone when she ordered a pizza from Chovisam Pizza, an outlet in Prabhadevi.
The pizza was delivered to her around 7.45pm, but the delivery boy returned 10 minutes later, saying he had given her the wrong order and asked her to call the outlet, the police said.
As the woman turned to get her mobile phone, the accused entered the flat, bolted the door and tried to rape her. When she resisted, he attacked her with a kitchen knife and hit her on the head with a marble chapati board, said Vinayak Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police (zone 3). The teenager then shut the main door and fled.
The victim, who was unconscious and bleeding profusely, was fortunate as an alert neighbour who had duplicate keys to her flat heard the commotion and entered the house when the victim did not answer her mobile phone.
The 22-year-old was rushed to the nearby Podar hospital, and later shifted to Raheja hospital, where her condition is believed to be stable, the police said.
The police arrested the accused after they got in touch with her mobile service provider, went through her call records and found that her last call had been to the pizza outlet.
