PUNE: The Faraskhana police have booked a 23-year-old man for an alleged attempt to commit suicide by consuming poison as well as an attempt to poison his wife on April 12 at Shaniwarwada.
The suspect, Gaurav Shankar Nanekar of Kasba Peth, is being treated at a hospital. His wife Shraddha, 20, lodged a complaint against her husband and in-laws with the Faraskhana police on Sunday after she was discharged from the hospital.
The suspect has been booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 309 (attempt to suicide) and 498 (A) (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code.
"We will arrest Gaurav after his discharge from the hospital," V B Jadhav, sub-inspector of Faraskhana police station, said.
Jadhav told TOI that Gaurav and Sharddha got married in December last year. As perShraddha's statement, since their wedding, Gaurav and his parents had been harassing her to bring Rs 4 lakh from her parents. "They also beat her up," he said.
Jadhav said the suspect is unemployed, while Sharddha had started working at a call centreafter their marriage.
"On April 12, Gaurav called Shraddha on her cell phone saying that he had met with an accident," he said.
Once Sharddha reached home, Gaurav asked her to come out with him as he wanted to talk.
"When they reached near Shaniwarwada, Gaurav asked Shraddha to wait. He went to the market and purchased a bottle of poison. The duo then entered Shaniwarwada," Jadhav said.
Inside Shaniwarwada, Gaurav mixed the poison with some water and forced Shraddha to drink it. He also consumed it. The couple went back home where Shraddha started vomiting. She informed Gaurav's parents about the incident. "They were rushed to the hospital," Jhadav said. "We had recorded their statement at the hospital."
He said that after her discharge, Sharddha approached the police station and lodged a complaint. "We recorded her fresh statement. She has alleged that her husband forced her to consume poison and that her in-laws used to harass her for money."
Gaurav was brought to the police station for questioning on Sunday. "We had to re-admit him in the hospital as he started complaining of uneasiness," Jadhav said.
