NEW DELHI: The brutality of Delhi Police yet again came to the fore on Monday when five policemen abducted a 30-year-old man, took him to a secluded barrack and thrashed him to death. The brutal incident has been reported form Bindapur area in southwest Delhi.

The rogue cops, identified as head constable Bhoop Singh and constables, Rajesh, Sudeep, Uttam and Arvind, have been arrested. "The five accused policemen were arrested and charged with murder and abduction," said Dinesh Kumar Gupta, additional DCP, south west district.

The deceased, identified as Manoj Kumar, owned a travel agency in Uttam Nagar. Family members said Manoj was fond of boxing and would often participate in local matches. He was married a year ago and has a seven-month-old son. His wife had gone to meet her parents in Lucknow while he was staying with his parents at their Uttam Nagar house.

Manoj was picked up by the cops around 10am in an investigation of celebratory firing during a wedding, which apparently happened a few days ago.

"On Monday morning, the five cops came to Uttam Nagar and asked Manoj to accompany them to Bindapur for questioning. When Manoj claimed ignorance about the case, they forcefully dragged him into a car. His parents tried to stop them failing which they registered a case of kidnap at Uttam Nagar police station," said a family member.

Police said that Manoj was taken to a room inside a barrack and beaten up brutally to make him confess to the crime. He received fatal injuries which led to the death. Sources added that Manoj was beaten up after he refused to confess that he owned an illegal pistol which he had fired during a wedding.

Around 1pm, DDU hospital officials informed police that the body of a man had been left inside their premises by a few men. Police reached the spot and called up his family members by taking the number from his mobile phone. "We were asked to identify a dead body which could belong to Manoj. There was no reason given for the cause of the death," said a family member.

Meanwhile, a team from Bindapur police station searching for the five missing cops came t o know that they were last seen near the barrack. Later, when they came to know about the man's body dumped at DDU hospital, CCTV footage from the hospital gate was checked and it was found that the five men had come there to dump the body. They were then nabbed and during questioning admitted to the crime.
