Ex-judo champ alleges dowry harassment

COIMBATORE: A 25-year-old woman from Mandya in Karnataka state lodged a petition against her husband with the rural police on Tuesday, claiming that she was mentally and physically tortured by him for dowry of 10lakh. The woman was the national and state level judo champion during her school days and works as a swimming instructor in an international school in Bangalore.
Arpitha, 25, daughter of B C Madappa from Rajkumar Colony in Mandya in Karnataka lodged a complaint with the inspector of the anti-land grab cell of the rural police, Karunakaran, on Tuesday. She stated in her complaint that she had won several judo championships both at the state and national level during her school days.
Her marriage was fixed to K Sydrash Babu, 29, a fashion designer from Vadavalli in Coimbatore district. Her parents gave 450 grams of gold ornaments as dowry and spent Rs 35 lakh on the marriage function held on November 13, 2013.
"I lived with him for just 20 days in Coimbatore. I returned to my hometown. He was very suspicious of my character, even if I looked out of the window of a moving car," said Arpitha. When she returned to her husband after two months, he said he did not wish to live with her. Instead, he demanded Rs 10 lakh dowry and threatened to attack her with acid if she failed to give him the money.
Inspector Karunakaran immediately forwarded the petition to Perur all women police station inspector Indirani Shobia who interrogated Sydrash on Tuesday evening. He has been asked to appear at the station for interrogation on Wednesday.
