Day Judge Yadav ruled, 'mediator' called her and the litigants: CBI

Exactly 40 minutes before Justice Nirmal Yadav was due to pronounce her judgment in a property dispute, to influence which she was allegedly paid Rs 15 lakh, Delhi businessman Ravinder Singh — believed to be a close friend of the judge and a mediator in the property dispute — spoke to her on the phone for 82 seconds, the CBI has claimed.

The same day, March 11, 2008, Singh also spoke to lawyer Sanjiv Bansal, in favour of whose client Yadav decided the property dispute. The conversation during the lunch break of the court is said to have lasted 56 seconds.

After the court closed, Singh spoke to Raj Kumar Jain, who lost the case, for 37 seconds.

Details of these and other calls have been produced in court for the first time by the CBI as it tries to prove the charge of conspiracy and corruption in the infamous cash-at-judge's-door case of 2008.

Yadav was a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court at the time and has been chargesheeted along with Bansal, Singh and two others. The dispute related to a plot in Panchkula and was being heard by Yadav.

The Indian Express has a copy of the call records produced in the special CBI court in Chandigarh on Monday by the special CBI public prosecutor Anupam Gupta. According to the records, Singh called Yadav at 9.20 am on the day of the ruling, spoke to Bansal at 1.17 pm and to Jain at 4.26 pm.

The records claim that Singh was in regular touch with Jain and as many as 21 calls were exchanged between them in less than a month-and-a-half. But the two apparently stopped speaking on the phone after March 12, 2008, a day after Yadav gave her verdict, when they spoke to each other five times.

The records claim that Singh spoke to Jain on two other days on which Yadav heard the case. On February 1, 2008, the date of the first hearing, Singh and Jain spoke twice, for 43 and 65 seconds. On February 4, the day Yadav reserved her orders, Singh and Jain spoke for 18 seconds, according to the CBI.

The CBI suspects Jain did not challenge the high court ruling as he had entered into a mutual understanding with Singh.
