A 32-year-old Naranpura bride-to-be has proved to be what the country needs to tame its dowry-hungry grooms.

This gutsy woman met her suitors last minute demand for a fat dowry with the reprisal it required, and didn't think twice about what her future entails while convincing her family to lodge a police complaint against the groom to-be and his family.

According to the complaint at Naranpura police station, filed just an hour before the wedding ceremony on Monday, the Mumbai-based groom, who is a chartered accountant and works in a bank had threatened not to turn up for marriage ceremony if his demand of Rs5 lakh was not met.

The bride chose to teach the groom and his family a lesson instead of putting the burden on the shoulders of her father, a 63-year-old retired man.

Residents of Shashtrinagar in Naranpura, the family consists of two daughters and a son, the eldest daughter being married.

The father put his second daughter's profile in a booklet of their caste for a suitable match, and residents of Kandivali in Mumbai, Usha and Lalit Vanzara showed interest in her for their son Amar.

They got in touch with the girl's family in May and several meetings later, the duo got engaged on June 2. The wedding was scheduled on July 15. It is also learnt that a party plot near their house was also booked for the function.

However, when the whole family got busy in final preparations for the upcoming marriage, they were in for a shock when the prospective mom-in-law called the elder sister on Saturday and demanded Rs5 lakh as dowry. After some time, Amar also called up his fiancé with a similar demand.

The girl's family made repeated attempts to convince the Vanzaras, but to no avail.

"Unsure the girl's family half-heartedly continued with the preparations till the D-day. But, as time passed by, slowly it dawned on them that the groom will not turn up till his demand was met," said DB Basia, PI, Naranpura.

An hour before the marriage — which was scheduled for 3:30 pm — the girl's family, led by the bride herself, lodged a complaint of cheating, breach of trust and dowry demand against the Vanzaras. Based on the complaint, Naranpura police have started investigation.

  1. In my opinion, dowry allegations seems to be totally baseless and is being used to defame groom and protect bride's future by their folks. Reading into the article, it seems that the groom must have got cold feet of getting into commitment and must have backed out at last moment.. This type of getting cold feet is very common and prevailent in western countries..and mostly such brides or groom are termed as "runaway brides or groom" at last moments.. but again it is an unforgivable excuse to back out and not honor marriage commitment, especially in traditional and conservative country like India, where people work very hard for their livlihood to meet their ends. if there was any mismatch mind setting between both groom and bride, groom had enough time-span to communicate with bride and could have called off his engagement ahead of time, instead of backing out closer to marriage date and this way both parties could have avoided any kind of financial and emotional strain or losses..
In ref to dowry threat allegations and complaints made by bride and their parents have no base... and they'll have to prove it to police and media that such threat was made by groom and his mother on phone conversation with them ...the best way will be to obtain and retrieve telephone conversation recordings from the calling and receiving telephone companies from where such communication took place (if technically the conversation must have lasted for min 2 mins or more then recordings can be obtained or retrieved).. and if they cannot prove these accusations, it will be disgrace and dishonesty on bride side, news media, to accuse and defame groom and their parents..in anti dowry allegations..
Again, as a Chartered Accountant working with large Investment bank, earning seven figures, it doesn't make sense for groom and his family to ask for 5 lacs rupees dowry to make lifetime marriage decision....proper facts should be investigated before concluding and defaming anyone...!!
