COIMBATORE: **Over 50 lawyers staged a protest against Tirupur police, who arrested a magistrate last week in connection with a raping charge filed by a woman police sub-inspector, in front of the Coimbatore integrated court complex on Tuesday**.

S Thangaraj, 31, a judicial magistrate of Fast Track Court, Coonoor in the Nilgiris district, was arrested on June 29 by Tirupur police for allegedly raping a woman-sub-inspector attached with Palladam police station. After the arrest, the advocates across the state condemned the police for arresting the judicial magistrate.

"Around 4am on June 29, an FIR was registered against the magistrate and he was taken to Avinashi police station from Namakkal. The police did not intimate the registrar of the Madras High Court before making the arrest. The magistrate was treated like a hardcore criminal by the police," said R Nicolas, an advocate.

He added that Thangaraj and his family members approached the woman SI's family about their marriage. But the SI's family members refused to accept the proposal citing that the magistrate belonged to Dalit community. After they refused, the magistrate's family made arrangements to get him married to another woman.

**Meanwhile, advocates from Tirupur boycotted the court on Tuesday. Over 600 advocates from Tirupur District Court Advocates Association, Tirupur Advocate Association and Tirupur Bar Association boycotted the court**.

"The boycott will continue on Wednesday as well. We strongly condemn the police for the arrest of the judicial officer," said R Manickaraj, joint secretary of Tirupur District Court Advocates Association.
