A 20-year-old college student was allegedly gangraped and then set on fire in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah district. Etawah is the home district of Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose Samajwadi Party is in power in the state.

Latest in a string of horrific rape cases being reported from UP, the case has brought the issue home to the Yadavs.

The girl's brother has filed a complaint against five men and one woman with the Ikdil police but arrests are yet to be made in the case. The incident took place at Dasermau village, 40 km from district headquarters. The girl suffered 80% burns and her condition is said to be critical.

Victim's family said the girl was abducted when she had gone out to attend nature's call. She was gangraped and the accused set her on fire to avoid identification.

The police, on the other hand, maintained that the girl was in love with one of the accused who is named in the FIR. SSP Neelabjo Chowdhary said a panchayat was held two days ago and it had decided that the marriage should take place.

The suspect's family, however, demanded a dowry of Rs. 5 lakh which the girl's family was unable to provide and the girl set herself on fire in desperation. Further investigations are on in the case.
