Cop charged for sexual abuse of trafficking victim

PANAJI: Crime branch has filed a 256-page chargesheet before a special court, Panaji, against suspended police constable Vaman Naik, who has been accused of sexually abusing a woman rescued from trafficking.
Naik is in judicial custody since January, 14, 2013.
Crime branch stated that they have recorded the statements of 72 witnesses in the case and that since investigations are still on a supplementary report will be filed before the court upon completion of the probe.
The chargesheet has been filed under Section 376 (rape) 377 (unnatural sex), 384, 385 (extortion), Sections 4,5,8 and 9 of Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 and Sections 7 and 13(1) read with 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The chargesheet states that Naik, while posted at Calangute police station, misused his position as a policeman, collected protection money from victims of trafficking, threatened them and obtained sexual favours from them.
Naik is alleged to have committed the offences when he was attached to Calangute police station from July 29, 2005, to July, 23, 2011, and again from April 16, 2012, to November 24, 2012.
The chargesheet also states that the victims identified Naik before an executive magistrate and Mapusa joint mamlatdar.
Referring to one of the witnesses police stated in the chargesheet that Naik would visit them in civil clothes in their rented rooms. Witness also stated that the victims had informed her that Naik would come alone and harass them for money and for sexual favours.
