CHANDRAKONA: Four persons, allegedly Trinamool workers, have been arrested and charged with abetting the suicide of a schoolteacher after trying to extort Rs 2 lakh from him by levelling a false molestation charge against him.
Pratap Ghosh, a part-time teacher at Bhairavpur Ramgopi Vidyaniketan in Chandrakona, West Midnapore, was found hanging from a tree near his house in West Midnapore's Jamgeriya village on Tuesday.
A police source said that a Class VIII girl who used to take tuition from him had levelled a "false charge" of molestation against him a few days back.
Pratap's wife Manju and brother had lodged a complaint with the Chandrakona town police against 12 people, including the girl's father. Police found a suicide note on the body, in whichGhosh had written that he had been falsely accused.
Manju said: "The girl's father informed the school head teacher about the false allegation of molestation but did not dare lodge a police complaint. Some local Trinamool workers stopped my husband while he was returning home on Monday. Together, they asked him either to pay Rs 2 lakh or face a severe beating and public humiliation. That same evening, my husband told me the names of the persons who had harassed him and I named them in the FIR."
West Midnapore SP Bharati Ghosh said an allegation of molestation had been brought against Pratap. "We have arrested four of the accused and an investigation is on. The investigators will also probe whether the handwriting on the suicide note is that of Pratap," the SP said.
The four arrested persons were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.
Students of the school demonstrated in front of the girl's house on Friday, accusing her of making a false allegation against their geography teacher and pushing him to take his life.
The protesters said they had asked their head teacher, Tushar Ghosh, to expel her from school. Ghosh said a meeting of the school managing committee would be held soon to discuss the demand.
