Woman accuses lover of setting her ablaze, dies
BANGALORE: A woman who accused her married lover of setting her on fire, died at the Victoria Hospital burns ward on Thursday afternoon.
Pavitra, 21, a resident of Srirampuram, in her statement to the tahsildar on Thursday morning, said she and Bharathi, 32, a native of Tamil Nadu and resident of Subramanya Colony near Guddadahalli in Hebbal, were colleagues in a high-end watch strap making unit in Gorguntepalya of Peenya Industrial Area Phase III. They had a live-in relationship, with Pavitra staying with him on Sundays and holidays for the past two to three months.
DCP (North) Sandeep Patil told TOI that Pavitra didn't realize Bharathi was married, and his wife and children were living in Tamil Nadu. "Last Sunday, Pavitra landed up at his residence and asked him to marry her. But he refused, and confessed that he was already married. Pavitra didn't believe him, and continued to pester him. On Monday morning, he allegedly poured kerosene on her and set her afire," police said, quoting her statement.
Police took up an attempt to murder case against Bharathi, and later converted it to a murder charge. "Bharathi also sustained 40% burns and is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital," he said.
However, sources in Victoria Hospital said Pavitra had confessed to them that she had set herself ablaze. "But the statement before the tahsildar holds legal sanction," sources said.
In his statement, Bharathi told doctors that Pavitra took the kerosene can from the kitchen, poured it out and set herself ablaze. "I tried to douse the fire and sustained burns," he reportedly said.
