A city advocate was arrested for allegedly assaulting an MTC bus driver and a staff in an incident of road rage on Friday.

The advocate, identified by police as Parithi (34), had allegedly assaulted the driver K Anand Babu (route no. 2A) near Central Railway Station as he apparently did not give way for his bike to overtake the bus.

About a dozen advocates had trailed the bus up to Anna Square bus stand and thrashed Anandha Babu and a staff in the bus stand with slippers. "He overtook the vehicle and parked his bike in front of the bus blocking the way on Wall Tax Road. He then entered the bus and beat  the driver. A police officer intervened and pacified us. So, we left the matter and came to the bus stand. But the advocates had gathered their friends and assaulted the driver again at Anna Square," said Sekar, conductor of the bus.

The MTC staff alleged that the advocates were drunk and they mercilessly attacked the driver using their footware and tore his dress.

After the attack, the MTC bus drivers staged a protest by halting the buses on the Beach Road disrupting traffic for nearly 30 minutes in the evening. The drivers gave up the protest after the police arrested Parithi on a complaint filed by Sekar.

"We have arrested Parithi, a resident of Kanigapuram, based on the complaint. He was found drunk and after obtaining a doctor's certificate, we have booked him on charges of drunken driving too," said a police officer.

A group of advocates subsequently staged a road roko in front of Chinthathripet police station condemning Parithi's arrest.
