NEW DELHI: Slapping her daughter-in-law, Rachna, and throwing a slipper at her cost Madhu Dawar dearly when the woman allegedly hit back with a hammer and killed the 55-year-old in two blows at their Malviya Nagar residence, the police said.

The daughter-in-law then had a bath, changed her clothes and made her room look like as if it had been robbed. She bolted the door of her neighbour from outside to ensure there was no witness and then shut herself up in the room. She sent a text message to her husband asking him to save her from an attacker who had barged into the house and then feigned losing consciousness.

However, her locking herself up in the same room that had been ransacked swung the needle of suspicion towards her. The police then conducted a search of the house and recovered the salwar she was wearing at the time of murder from a cupboard. The bloodstains on the clothes nailed her lies.

Rachna, who has been arrested, is a graduate in political science from Delhi University. She belongs to Jaipur and married Madhu's son in 2010.

P S Kushwah, addl DCP (south), recalled that on August 29, they had received a call about a quarrel at R-39, ground floor, Khirki Extension. Immediately, a team led by SHO Vijay Pal of Malviya Nagar police station reached the spot. They got to know that the two injured women in the house had been taken to the trauma centre.

While Madhu was declared brought dead, Rachna had abrasions on her left forearm and left foot. Rachna said in her statement that a person with whom her mother-in-law had earlier discussed depositing their gold jewellery in the bank had come home. That man had attacked Madhu with a kitchen knife and also hit her with a blunt object on her head, she said. Rachna said that she had locked herself up in the room and informed her husband, brother and mother about the incident from her cellphone.

A case of murder and robbery was registered and the SHO and inspector Rajender Singh from the special task force began investigations. "Forensic opinion regarding Rachna's injuries was sought as there were contradictions in her statement. The doctor felt the injuries could be self-inflicted and caused by a sharp weapon. The probe then focused on her," Kushwah added. Nothing had been stolen from the house and the jewellery was found intact.

Rachna broke down during interrogation and disclosed that she had a heated argument with her mother-in-law and the woman had abused her for wasting food. "She also slapped me twice and threw a chappal at me. So, I came to her room, took a hammer and hit her on the head twice," she allegedly said in her confession. After that she dressed up the scene of crime, inflicted minor injuries on herself with a kitchen knife and texted her husband for help.
