Girijan Co-operative MD caught in domestic violence allegations

TNN | Sep 20, 2013, 05.27 AM IST

VISAKHAPATNAM:

Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer and Girijan Co-operative Corporation managing director Eetakota Ramesh Kumar has landed in the eye of a storm following allegations of domestic violence by his estranged wife, who on Thursday stormed into his house in MVP Colony along with her daughters and All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) activists. After leaving her inside the activists later staged a protest outside the house.

Ramesh Kumar, a 1990 batch officer, has been accused by his MTech graduate wife Swapna of beating her up, abandoning her and her daughters aged 11 and 6. The daughter of a retired additional commissioner of commercial tax and a Khammam native, Swapna married Ramesh Kumar 12 years ago. She alleged that the harassment by her husband and in-laws started after she gave birth to her first girl child 11 years ago and increased after she gave birth to the second girl six years ago.

"After the birth of my second girl, my husband was disappointed and started beating me like an animal. He did not even provide me and my children food. I used to feed my children rice mixed with water and had to take the help of the maid servant in the collector's bungalow to procure food from outside even though I was a collector's wife," said Swapna, sobbing inconsolably.

She also accused the IAS officer of abandoning her and her children as he intended to get married again and had already filed for judicial separation in the family court at Vizag. "My daughters ask continuously for their father. I am living for my daughters. I am not asking for his property or anything," she said, adding that her children had not been going to the school for the past seven months.

Swapna had come to Vizag with her husband last year when he came on deputation as GCC MD but was denied entry into the house after she went to Warangal to appear for MTech exams. Swapna said she had also complained about the harassment to the chief secretary of Madhya Pradesh, when Ramesh Kumar was working there, and then to AP chief secretary five months ago. She also lodged a complaint of domestic violence at Warangal, where she did a majority of her studies.

The Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission took up her case suo motto after reports were aired in the electronic media and even asked the Vizag Police Commissioner to submit a report before July 15 this year. Swapna said she also complained to then district collector V Seshadri and DIG Swati Lakra five months ago but to no avail.

While the IAS officer did not respond to phone calls, he later sent an unsigned letter to the TOI office, stating that his wife and various women organizations, who he termed as unlawful persons, had staged a sit-out in front of his house and made baseless aspersions of him harassing his wife.

He alleged that his wife had deliberately breached the assurance given to the court and made public sensitive family matters and leveled false, frivolous and baseless allegations. He alleged that his wife had filed cases against him, his parents, sister and elder brother. Alleging that because of his wife many cases were pending before the courts, he said her attempts to forcibly enter his parent's house had frightened the old couple suffering from cardiac problems. The GCC MD said he is a law abiding citizen and would abide by decision of the courts in the matter.
