GUWAHATI: Among all the criminal cases registered with the state women's commission over the last three years, the highest number of cases is of domestic violence. The number of such cases is rising rapidly in the state.

Between 2010 and 2012, around 358 cases of domestic violence, bigamy, maintenance, dowry, rape, kidnapping, sexual harassment, land and miscellaneous were registered with the women's commission. It registered 148 cases of domestic violence, 20 cases of bigamy and 16 cases of maintenance during this period. Around 30 dowry cases, 17 rape cases, seven kidnapping cases, two sexual harassment cases, 20 land-related cases and 108 miscellaneous cases have been registered.

Monideepa Borkakoty, member secretary of the commission, said, "There is no doubt that crime against women is increasing, but the awareness level has also gone up and more victims now come out and registered complaints with the commission."

She said there is a very strong act to curb domestic violence - the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. "People think that only married women who are tortured by their in-laws and husband can file complaints. But, under this act, even live-in partners, divorcees and domestic helps can register complaints," she added.

She said harassment at the workplace is also on the rise. The commission has asked the government to form a monitoring or complaint committee in all offices to tackle the same.
