Jewellery firm MD held with Rs 2.3cr gems, sent to jail

MUMBAI: Jewellery firm managing director VihariPoddar, who was arrested for smuggling in diamond jewellery worth Rs 2.35 crore, was sent to Byculla jail at 3.30am on Friday. On Thursday night, she was remanded in judicial custody till August 14.

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have also issued summons to her businessman husband Abhishek Poddar and four other family members asking them to be present for questioning.

Vihari, who runs Vihari Jewels Pvt Ltd in Singapore, had allegedly hidden the jewellery in her innerwear; she was intercepted by DRI officials at the international airport on Tuesday.

Officials said Vihari created a ruckus about her health in J J Hospital on Thursday night. She had collapsed in the court earlier in the day. Officials claimed that this was an attempt by her to escape jail. After conducting 16 tests, including those for psychiatric disorders, doctors refused to admit her to the hospital saying she was in good health. "We then took her to jail though her family insisted on shifting her to a private hospital," an official said. Her bail application will be heard by the court on Saturday.

Officials said they would question Abhishek to find out if he knew about his wife activities. Abhishek is one of the promoters of Siyaram Silk Mills and the company website shows that he holds 1.12% stake. "Vihari's uncle Jiten Sheth and his wife, both of whom are directors in her two showrooms here, will also be questioned. In his confession, Sheth has already admitted that his shops had 20% unaccounted stock. The jewellery was supplied by Vihari to them and she paid Jiten a 2% commission," an official said.
