BARC scientist booked for harassing wife
A BARC scientist has been booked by the Gamdevi police after his wife lodged a complaint of harassment against him.
Though the woman had allegedly been tolerating mental and physical harassment for nearly two decades, she said she could not take it any more as her husband had started beating their 19-year-old daughter as well.
The police said the woman, Sompa Maiti, 46, lives with her husband Subhash, 49, a scientific officer at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mankhurd, in-laws and daughter in the Peddar Road area of South Mumbai.
Sompa and Subhash got married in 1992. According to her complaint, from 1994, he started harassing her physically and mentally.
"She has not given any specific reason behind the fights and beatings but said that he would just slap her and taunt her for petty things. She hasn't registered any complaint against her in-laws. She said they never encouraged him but never stopped him either.
There were no demands for dowry, just beatings and harassment," said investigating officer Jyoti Bharmal.
Bharmal said the couple will be called for counselling. "We have a team of doctors, counsellors and social workers who speak to such couples and try to sort out the matter.
Subhash is off duty on weekends; so, we plan to call him for counselling sessions. Only after that we will decide on the next course of action," said Bharmal.
She added that Subhash has been booked under 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty).
The case was registered on May 27 after Sompa approached Nisar Tamboli, deputy commissioner of police, and narrated her ordeal to him. He then asked the Gamdevi police to look into the matter.
